Identifying inefficient Oil wells through Oil Extraction Process Simulation

Focus Group Company, working with a large oil and gas operator, helped address financial inefficiency caused by declining deposits where about 20% of wells produced little or no profit. The company needed a better way to decide whether to shut down, retain, or repair marginal wells, and used AnyLogic simulation software to build a digital twin of the deposit for decision support.

Using AnyLogic, the team created an agent-based oil extraction model with GIS mapping for around 400 wells, connected to real infrastructure and fed with operational data. The simulation identified economically inefficient wells and unprofitable maintenance work, while also showing how failures in one well affected neighboring wells; the solution is expected to reduce operating costs by USD 1 million per year.
