Evaluating Hospital Inpatient Care Capacity

Stockholm County, Sweden was building a new highly specialized hospital and needed to determine whether its planned investments and operating assumptions would deliver acceptable care production. To answer these questions, Stockholm County used AnyLogic simulation modeling to assess hospital-wide capacity, patient flows, and inpatient care allocation scenarios.

AnyLogic developed a system-level discrete event simulation model that examined physical resources, care production, and resource utilization across the hospital. The solution helped estimate operations under different scenarios, revealed that inpatient care resources were far below what was needed, and supported decision-makers in taking action; the model also became a reusable template for analyzing other hospitals.
