Oil Pipeline Network Development Finding Bottlenecks and Choosing the Right Policies

An oil and gas pipeline operator in North America faced recurring downstream delivery rejections, making it difficult to understand the impact on its network and whether upstream tank capacity could handle deferred batches. Stream Systems Ltd., working with AnyLogic, used AnyLogic simulation software to build a flexible network model that could analyze bottlenecks and test different pipeline policies.

AnyLogic and Stream Systems Ltd. implemented a multimethod simulation model covering terminals, tanks, pipelines, and oil batches, with routing, compatibility, congestion, and reliability rules. The results helped identify bottlenecks, evaluate mitigation options, and support a policy change that delivered $50–$80M in capital savings plus about $2M in additional monthly revenue, from an approximate $3M investment.
