Alstom Develops a Rail Network Digital Twin for Railway Yard Design and Predictive Fleet Maintenance

Alstom, a global transportation company, needed a better way to manage maintenance for its busy Pendolino fleet on the constrained West Coast Main Line. Fixed timetables, changing daily conditions, and limited depot capacity made it difficult to schedule maintenance without driving up costs or increasing failure risk. Alstom worked with AnyLogic simulation software, with support from SimPlan AG, to address this challenge.

AnyLogic was used to build a rail network digital twin with agent-based modeling, real operational data, GIS mapping, and an embedded heuristic maintenance scheduler. The solution created a digital twin of the entire WCML fleet, reduced unnecessary maintenance costs, identified bottlenecks in depots and schedules, and supported faster, more confident decisions for operations, design, and tenders.
