Customer-Centric Transportation Network Modelling

PWC worked with a public transportation company in Australia that needed a customer-centric view of its railway network to better understand incident impacts, improve delay predictions, and support operational and maintenance decisions. Using AnyLogic simulation software, PWC aimed to model train movements, incidents, and passenger behavior across the network.

PWC built a scalable simulation in AnyLogic that combined discrete-event and agent-based modeling, using rail, timetable, incident, and smart card data to analyze network recovery and passenger effects. The solution delivered a more accurate passenger-centric Lost Customer Minutes metric, helped test incident mitigation policies, and supported customer-focused KPIs and investment decisions by showing how incidents affected customers across the network.
