Simulation of Maternity Ward Operations

Karolinska University Hospital, in Stockholm County, Sweden, was planning a new maternity ward and needed help deciding what resources, capacity, and work methods would best support the future facility. Using AnyLogic simulation software, the hospital wanted to compare options such as an integrated mother-and-child room model versus the current setup with dedicated antenatal, delivery, and postnatal rooms.

AnyLogic built a discrete event simulation of both the current and projected wards, allowing the hospital to test scenarios in parallel under the same demand and review results in workshops. The model helped participants better understand operational tradeoffs, showed that the future ward scenario was feasible, and provided numerical and graphical indicators to assess each option’s strengths and weaknesses.
