Automated Driving Systems Testing Using Agent-Based Modeling

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) wanted to determine whether autonomous vehicles could work together without a central control center. Using AnyLogic simulation software, SwRI explored automated driving systems in a distributed, cooperative setup where vehicles would share information and make decisions on their own.

AnyLogic helped SwRI build an agent-based model of vehicles operating in an enclosed area with obstacles and refueling tasks. The simulation showed that decentralized cooperation was feasible, validated algorithms before real-world testing, and reduced both risk and development cost for autonomous systems.
