Optimizing Large-Scale AMR Fleet Operations

BMW faced a challenge optimizing autonomous mobile robot (AMR) fleet operations for material transport in a vehicle production facility. Inefficient task allocation was causing production delays, traffic congestion, and unnecessary fleet growth, so BMW worked with AnyLogic simulation software to study better assignment methods.

AnyLogic built a multimethod simulation model using agent-based and discrete-event approaches, and AnyLogic Cloud was used to run parallel scenario tests. The JVC task allocation algorithm was identified as the best option, cutting AMR fleet size by 30% from 58 to 42 robots for 7,500 tasks, nearly eliminating late tasks, lowering traffic density, and reducing procurement and infrastructure costs.
