Maximizing Throughput of a Parcel Sorting System by Using Simulation

Noorjax Consulting faced a throughput problem in tilt tray sorter operations, where the way parcels were assigned to trays caused about a 10% drop in throughput and poor space utilization. The challenge was to optimize parcel-to-tray assignment while preventing recirculation and handling constraints in distribution, fulfillment, and baggage systems. Noorjax Consulting used AnyLogic to model the system and explore a more efficient approach.

AnyLogic implemented a mathematical optimization solution, using mixed-integer linear programming to assign parcels to trays based on constraints such as tray length, induction lane sequence, and recirculation prevention. The solution was integrated through REST/UDP JSON interfaces and simulation support in AnyLogic, enabling flexible system communication and customization. The result was improved tray utilization and higher sorter throughput, addressing the reported 10% performance loss.
