Increasing the Efficiency of an Automated Warehouse System to Meet Demand

Browns Shoes, a Canadian footwear retailer, needed to upgrade its automated warehouse system as order volumes grew and its existing picking stations and operating methods started causing slowdowns and fulfillment delays. To test improvements safely before making real changes, the company worked with vendor AnyLogic, using simulation software to evaluate warehouse automation options.

AnyLogic helped Browns Shoes and SimWell model the warehouse in detail, including picking stations, conveyor loops, carton handling, and equipment behavior, so they could compare scenarios such as adding stations, a new carton erector, and an extra lane. The simulation showed how these changes could reduce bottlenecks and speed packing, while AnyLogic Cloud made it easier to share and refine the model; overall, the approach saved significant time and effort and gave Browns Shoes a clearer path to improving efficiency and reducing costs.
