Optimizing Energy Systems with AnyLogic Simulation Modeling

The European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER) needed to evaluate decentralized energy systems with renewables and avoid stability issues, especially when testing the impact of photovoltaic solar power and improving local energy management. EIFER used AnyLogic simulation modeling to study island energy systems, cloud-cover scenarios, and co-generation behavior across linked grid levels, generation, and consumers.

Using AnyLogic, EIFER built multiscale and agent-based models to simulate electricity and heat flows, identify imbalance risks, and analyze capex/opex and seasonality effects. The results showed PV impacts across three grid voltage levels, exposed blackout/brownout risks under cloud cover, and helped quantify economic and operational tradeoffs in decentralized energy systems.
