Better Decision Making with Manufacturing Simulation, Digital Twin Technology, and AI

Engineering Group worked with Lagor, an Italian manufacturer of ferromagnetic transformer cores, to solve production bottlenecks as the company scaled. Lagor’s manual, short-horizon scheduling approach was leading to frequent line blockages and inefficient shop-floor movements. Engineering Group used AnyLogic manufacturing simulation software and digital twin technology to model the production system and assess better operating scenarios.

Using AnyLogic, Engineering Group built a real-time digital twin connected to SCADA data and later added reinforcement learning with Pathmind to optimize movement sequencing on the line. The solution helped reproduce the full production process, test “what-if” plans safely, and train an AI policy that avoided bottlenecks. The result was improved production planning, fewer interruptions, and financial savings, with AnyLogic enabling seamless integration between the live system and its digital replica.
