Montreal International Airport Simulation for Early Bag Storage System Implementation

Montreal International Airport, the third busiest airport in Canada, faced rapid passenger growth that was straining its baggage handling system and limiting aircraft turnaround times. Working with AnyLogic and GSS, the airport needed a way to design an Early Bag Storage (EBS) system that could smooth baggage flows, support peak demand, and maintain service levels without immediate major infrastructure expansion.

AnyLogic was used to build a simulation-based digital twin for multi-criteria optimization of the baggage operation, including flight allocations, pier usage, bag storage decisions, and staffing for a temporary manual EBS. The solution helped Montreal International Airport preserve service levels during the transition, improve operational decisions, avoid costly contingency measures and safety risks, reduce overtime, and eliminate the need for an additional sorter with ten piers, creating significant cost savings.
