TAKRAF, a global German industrial manufacturer and supplier for the mining industry, faced a coal loading port whose demand was forecast to rise 33% beyond its operating capacity. To help plan the needed expansion and understand bottlenecks amid weather, train delays, and varying coal types, TAKRAF worked with AnyLogic and SimPlan using simulation-based decision support.

AnyLogic was used to build a multimethod model of the port, combining rail, fluid, and agent-based simulation to replicate coal handling from wagons to ships. The solution helped management identify capacity limits and improvement options, leading to faster access for high-demand coal heaps, better yard arrangement, presorting wagons, and a port extension plan with a new tipping station and storage area to meet the target throughput.
