Lean Business Services, a government-owned healthcare company in Saudi Arabia, wanted to improve long-distance patient transfers in rural areas where emergency resources are limited. Using AnyLogic for transportation logistics and healthcare simulation, the team studied how to reduce ambulance transfer problems such as long travel times, staff shortages, and difficulties for seriously ill patients.

Lean Business Services used AnyLogic to build a hybrid agent-based and discrete event simulation of multiple transfer scenarios, including air transfer options. The model analyzed key KPIs such as transport duration, staff availability, costs, and aircraft utilization, and showed that direct hospital-to-hospital air transfers were the best option due to low implementation cost, the shortest average trip time, and the lowest impact on unavailable medical staff.
