Changing Facility Layout Design to Increase Throughput in a Steel Service Center

TBS Consulting worked with NLMK’s Steel Center in Manage, Belgium, to help increase throughput by 1.5x as part of a facility modernization project. The site faced a complex layout challenge involving limited space, crane constraints, truck traffic, storage capacity, and seasonal demand variability, and TBS Consulting used AnyLogic simulation software to model the full production cycle and test layout options.

Using AnyLogic, TBS Consulting built an as-is simulation model plus scenario-analysis and planning tools to evaluate production line placement, crane and gate changes, and storage policies. The solution helped identify bottlenecks, including a crane running at over 70% utilization and delays at a gate, and confirmed the benefits of adding a new CTL production line; the model is now also being used for daily operations planning and future optimization.
