Simulation-based Railway Design Tool for Sugar Cane Logistics Optimization

U.S. Sugar, the largest sugar cane producer in the United States, needed a way to keep its refinery continuously supplied during harvest despite an aging fleet of cane cars and the high cost of replacement. With help from AnyLogic simulation software, Mosimtec and Crouch Engineering set out to test rail logistics options without risking real-world operations.

Using AnyLogic and the AnyLogic Rail Library, the team built a simulation-based railway design tool to model the refinery, rail yard, and transport network. AnyLogic helped them reject an expensive extra-track upgrade that offered little value, identify an operational improvement that boosted flow and reliability, and ultimately support a better solution involving an additional rotary dumper. The result was continuous refinery supply, improved downtime and maintenance performance, and a reusable tool for U.S. Sugar to keep testing scenarios and avoid costly mistakes.
