Increasing Throughput of Rail Container Terminal with Simulation

Ruscon, one of the major container shipping companies in the CIS region, needed a container yard planning solution to modernize a rail container terminal and determine the maximum capacity of the facility and its components. To tackle this challenge, Ruscon worked with AnyLogic and container yard simulation specialists to model the terminal’s rail, storage, customs, and handling operations.

AnyLogic built a digital twin of the terminal in the AnyLogic container yard planning environment, using 2D/3D simulation, virtual sensors, and detailed modeling of crane and logistics processes. The model improved accuracy to 96% versus 72% for the analytical model, helped identify bottlenecks and optimization measures, and showed that terminal capacity could be increased by 57%.
