Manufacturing Optimization for Flexible Manufacturing Systems

Machine Centers Manufacturing (MCM) needed a way to better design and evaluate complex flexible manufacturing systems for Industry 4.0 plants, including performance evaluation, initial configuration support, automation sizing, and comparison of different layouts. To address these challenges, MCM partnered with AnyLogic and Engineering Group to build a plant performance evaluation tool using simulation and digital twin technology.

AnyLogic helped power an FMS simulator built with a custom flexible manufacturing systems library tailored to MCM’s needs. The solution enabled rapid prototyping, control-policy testing, and custom UI-based analysis, helping MCM show high-level plant simulations during sales, support virtual commissioning, and create digital twins for real-time monitoring. The tool also improved insight into supply-chain behavior and backlog levels through sensitivity analysis.
