The University of Sydney and Accenture accelerate whale conservation with Claude

Researchers at the University of Sydney, in partnership with Accenture, faced the immense challenge of processing huge acoustic datasets for whale conservation. Traditional manual analysis of underwater recordings was too slow and labor-intensive, creating a significant data backlog. This was a critical problem as accurate population monitoring is urgently needed to combat threats from commercial whaling activities.

To solve this, the team implemented a solution using Anthropic's Claude. The AI model analyzed sound data converted into spectrograms, achieving 89.4% accuracy in detecting minke whales—a significant improvement over the previous 76.5% accuracy rate. Anthropic’s Claude transformed a two-week manual process into real-time analysis, enabling conservationists to quickly establish protected zones and redirect shipping traffic to save whale lives.
