The Washington Health Benefit Exchange (WAHBE), operator of the Washington Healthplanfinder online insurance marketplace, faced the challenge of ensuring its digital platform was accessible and easy to use for all residents, including those with disabilities. To deeply integrate accessibility into its design and agile development process, WAHBE partnered with vendor Anthro-Tech for accessibility research and to develop a strategic roadmap.

Anthro-Tech implemented a solution that included in-home usability testing with participants who have disabilities, comprehensive accessibility audits, and expert interviews. This research led to a prioritized roadmap for WCAG 2.1 AA compliance and recommendations for inclusive design. The impact was significant: WAHBE made accessibility a core value, hired a new internal accessibility expert using Anthro-Tech's onboarding documentation, and gained a data-driven plan for ongoing compliance and improved usability.
