Upgrading to the New Blackboard Improves Student Satisfaction, Success, and Retention

Greenville Technical College (GTC), a two‑year public college with about 13,500 students, faced student feedback calling for more consistent course design and higher success and retention rates. As a long‑time Blackboard institution, GTC chose to upgrade to Anthology’s Blackboard (Ultra) to modernize course layout, accessibility, mobile functionality, and course conversion across roughly 1,100 courses and to target about 40 high‑volume classes with historically low success.

Using Anthology’s Blackboard (Ultra) and an automated conversion process (partnering with K16 Solutions), GTC converted courses into Ultra modules, added a standardized “start‑here” module, preserved inline files, and freed faculty time for teaching. The Anthology-supported rollout — including pilot semesters — produced clear gains: Religion 201 success rates rose 35.1%, English 102 rose 33.7%, and Math 110 rose 27.2%, along with improved student satisfaction, retention, and faculty engagement.
