How Two Key Institutions Partnered with Anthology to Develop and Responsibly Introduce AI Innovations in EdTech

Northumbria University, a public university in Newcastle (population ~40,000), needed to introduce generative AI into teaching in a way that balanced innovation with data privacy, academic integrity and stakeholder concerns. To address these challenges they worked with Anthology and its Blackboard Learn platform to seek guidance on appropriate use cases, policy clarity and educator control over AI features.

Anthology partnered with customers via an AI Advisory Council and with Microsoft to develop the AI Design Assistant in Blackboard Learn Ultra, underpinned by Anthology’s Trustworthy AI Approach. Northumbria now uses the tool for formative test generation and image creation; more than 420 institutions have enabled the assistant, it has powered 270,000+ unique education tasks, and 95% of instructors surveyed say it saves them time.
