How Sacred Heart University Chose Blackboard over the Competition Twice

Sacred Heart University, a private Catholic university in Fairfield, Connecticut, had used Blackboard LMS for 20 years and later evaluated whether another learning management system might better fit the needs of its faculty and students. The university wanted a platform that was easy to use, powerful, flexible, and able to support personalized learning, so it piloted alternatives including Canvas by Instructure and Brightspace by D2L.

Anthology’s Blackboard LMS was tested through surveys, instructor training, course rebuilds, and feedback from faculty and students during the 2022 pilot. At the end of the process, faculty overwhelmingly preferred Blackboard LMS, with only 27% recommending a move to Canvas and 3.5% to Brightspace, and Sacred Heart continued using the platform while also voting on over 25 ideas implemented in the last 18 months.
