Tractors Use Virtual Modeling to Reduce Design Time and Costs

CNH Industrial (Case New Holland) needed to optimize cooling for large tractors that use five separate cooling modules within a tightly packaged engine compartment. Balancing increased engine power and limited space while ensuring adequate airflow and minimizing cooling power had previously required multiple costly, time-consuming prototypes. ANSYS (using ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS TGrid) was engaged to address these challenges.

ANSYS implemented full-system flow modeling to simulate airflow and module interactions across the entire engine bay, enabling optimized cooling-module placement and reduced cooling power. As a result, CNH Industrial eliminated fabrication and testing of multiple prototypes, validated the best-design choice with strong agreement between simulation and experiments, increased available engine power for implements, met thermal and packaging requirements, and accelerated time to market.
