Simulation Leads to Developing Faster Tire Balancing Machines

Hennessy Industries, an international aftermarket wheel service manufacturer and part of Danaher Corporation, needed a redesigned tire-balancing machine frame that would be the same size and weight but reduce balancing time and attenuate startup noise so sensors could detect imbalance. To accelerate development and evaluate design options without expensive prototyping, Hennessy partnered with QuEST Global and used ANSYS Mechanical simulation software.

QuEST Global used ANSYS to build and validate a high-fidelity structural model (correlated with accelerometer ping tests), performed harmonic and transient dynamic analyses, and iterated designs such as thicker frames and damping pads. With ANSYS, the team achieved results that matched test data, cut the balancer’s development time by about 50%, reduced the tire balancing cycle time by 20%, and enabled cost and design trade-off testing without further prototyping.
