Simulation Drives Thermal Performance Standards for Metal Building Insulation Systems

Owens Corning, a global leader in building materials, faced the industry-wide challenge of revising thermal performance standards for metal building insulation (MBI) systems—complex assemblies with mixed materials, narrow air pockets and sensitive fastening details that can create localized heat loss. To address this, Owens Corning turned to ANSYS, using ANSYS Fluent (and ANSYS Polyflow) to model three-dimensional flow and conjugate heat transfer in the MBI assemblies.

ANSYS tools generated high-quality meshes, solved the conjugate heat transfer problems and enabled post-processing to quantify overall heat transfer coefficients and their dependence on geometry and materials. The ANSYS-driven simulations produced validated results that helped define new thermal performance standards, reduced the need for physical prototyping, lowered costs and shortened the time required to achieve higher performance targets.
