A ANSYS Case Study
Peregrine Consulting, Inc., an aerospace design and analysis firm working with the U.S. Air Force, set out to develop condition‑based maintenance (CBM) for the F414 turbine engine to predict remaining life of individual engine components from as‑flown flight data. The company faced massive data management and modeling challenges—million‑degree‑of‑freedom FEA models, complex frictional contact, stress‑stiffening and large deflection effects—and needed a simulation backbone that could deliver results far faster than traditional week‑long analyses, so they selected ANSYS (ANSYS Mechanical) for its advanced simulation and parallel processing capabilities.
Peregrine combined ANSYS Mechanical with its TFLAMES data‑processing system and leveraged Distributed ANSYS on high‑performance multi‑CPU i*hydra servers to run full rotor pseudo‑transient thermal and structural analyses in parallel. Using ANSYS, end‑to‑end solution times dropped from weeks to hours, enabling per‑flight fatigue life predictions, practical condition‑based maintenance scheduling, reduced lifecycle costs and the potential to lower conservative safety factors.
