Metso Minerals - Customer Case Study

Metso Minerals needed to increase the work capacity of its C130 jaw crusher without increasing machine weight, but the geometrical complexity of jaw crushers limited the number of design alternatives engineers could evaluate. Metso Minerals used ANSYS tools — including ANSYS SpaceClaim, ANSYS Mechanical and ANSYS High‑Performance Computing (HPC) — to address long simulation turnarounds that previously took on the order of 21 hours for a typical moving‑jaw nonlinear model.

ANSYS helped Metso Minerals rapidly generate and analyze multiple design alternatives using SpaceClaim for direct modeling and Mechanical running on an ANSYS HPC platform, cutting design‑iteration time by 94%. The new C130 now delivers 270 metric tons per hour versus 245 metric tons per hour for the previous model while maintaining the same weight; solver times were reduced from roughly 21 hours to as low as 78 minutes (ANSYS also reports reductions to about 1 hour), and alternative generation is 7–20× faster.
