Preview of the Fluid Equipment Development Company Case Study

Fast-Track Development of New Pump-Turbine Energy Recovery Unit with Stringent Efficiency Requirements

Fluid Equipment Development Company (FEDCO), a global supplier of high-pressure pumps and energy recovery units for seawater desalination, faced urgent pressure to develop larger, more efficient hydraulic designs while competing with much larger manufacturers. Building and testing large prototypes was too slow and costly, and FEDCO had less than four weeks to finalize a single, correct hydraulic and casting design to meet stringent efficiency targets.

ANSYS provided a rapid simulation-led workflow using ANSYS Workbench, ANSYS CFX and ANSYS DesignModeler, integrated with FEDCO’s SolidWorks CAD and proprietary design tools, plus tailored on-site training so the team could master the platform in weeks. Using ANSYS CFX to validate and optimize designs, FEDCO met the efficiency requirements (exceeding extrapolated values by ~6%), achieved ongoing product-line gains of 4–7% efficiency, reduced operating noise by up to 15 dB, and increased automation—enabling FEDCO to compete effectively against much larger rivals.
