A ANSYS Case Study
EADS Innovation Works, the research and technology arm of the global aerospace and defense company EADS, needed to evaluate failure criteria for a composite load introduction rib (LIR) in a wing flap under a jammed-flap load scenario. Traditional solid-model approaches delivered accurate results but required extensive modeling time, so EADS turned to ANSYS tools—including ANSYS Composite PrepPost within ANSYS Workbench and ANSYS Mechanical—to improve accuracy and workflow efficiency.
ANSYS implemented a shell-based composite model using ANSYS Composite PrepPost to build plies as manufactured, defined rivet connections with beam elements, and used advanced post-processing to evaluate transverse shear and interlaminar normal stresses. The ANSYS solution produced nearly identical results to the solid model while enabling concept studies with fewer simplifications and reduced modeling time by up to 65 percent, significantly speeding development and evaluation of composite designs.
