Bioana, a Mexican medical-technology developer, faced the challenge of designing and validating implants and prostheses—such as a patent-pending coronary bifurcated stent—where material selection, structural loads and blood-flow performance must be proven before clinical use. To address this, Bioana adopted ANSYS simulation software (ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS Explicit STR, ANSYS CFX, ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Discovery SpaceClaim) to virtually test and refine device geometry, materials and performance.

Using ANSYS CFX and the ANSYS structural and materials toolset to model blood flow, vorticity, shear stress, pressures, contacts and custom biomaterials, ANSYS enabled Bioana to cut testing protocols nearly in half, perform full material characterization in software (so only final materials are purchased), develop up to four devices simultaneously, triple productivity and increase revenues by more than $30,000.
