A ANSYS Case Study
ar engineers was asked to help reduce the weight of a luxury superyacht after an initial design came in roughly 300 tons over target. The team used ANSYS solutions — notably ANSYS Composite PrepPost together with ANSYS Mechanical and ANSYS Workbench — to investigate replacing metal access doors with carbon composite designs that could meet certification loading while cutting mass.
Using ANSYS Composite PrepPost to model parametric CAD layups and simulate failure, buckling and connection behavior, ANSYS-enabled analyses proved the composite doors were feasible and produced a preliminary design and cost estimate within five days. The outcome: a 70% reduction in door weight, validated performance for certification, and faster iterative design thanks to the ANSYS-driven workflow.
