ANSYS CFD software helps optimize air intake and exhaust system performance for the XUV500 vehicle

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., the maker of the XUV500, needed to meet stringent emission and fuel‑economy targets and deliver strong engine performance despite limited under‑hood packaging. To predict and optimize air intake and exhaust performance early in the design cycle, they partnered with ANSYS and used ANSYS Fluent for CFD simulation.

ANSYS modeled correct geometry, porous filter/catalyst zones and compressible exhaust flows, then iterated bend angles and routing to lower suction and back pressure. Using ANSYS Fluent cut design time by two months, reduced part development costs by 40% for the air intake and 15% for the exhaust, and achieved 94% correlation with physical tests while meeting performance targets.
