Air Flow Simulation Helps Optimize Installation and Minimize Operation Costs of a Clean Room

AFC Air Flow Consulting was hired by a Swiss pharmaceutical plant to solve a clean-room challenge: a new blister packaging line required air-quality zone 2 (<100,000 particles/m³) while the production room measured zone 3. Rather than using an expensive full-room laminar-flow installation, AFC used ANSYS CFX engineering simulation software from ANSYS to assess ventilation options and develop a cost‑effective solution.

Using ANSYS CFX, AFC designed, simulated and validated a local push–pull ventilation device with integrated filters to create a protected zone 2 around the loading area, optimized geometry and operating parameters, and proved complete particle removal in simulations. The ANSYS-driven solution produced particle concentrations well below the specified limit and delivered measurable impact: more than 70% reduction in installation costs, over 50% lower operating costs, and over 90% energy savings.
