A Ansible Case Study
Lifesum is a Stockholm-based digital health startup with over 6.5 million downloads across Android, iOS and web, offering a personalized app to help users build healthier habits. Their AWS-hosted platform ran on Ubuntu servers and relied on Fabric, bash scripts and manual processes for deployments and provisioning, which made managing multiple environments, ensuring consistency and scaling reliably a significant challenge.
In February 2014 Lifesum adopted Ansible to provision Vagrant dev VMs, pre-bake AMIs, and automate EC2 bootstrapping via cloud-init and Auto Scaling. Using agentless Ansible playbooks standardized environments, let any developer run frequent deployments with fast rollbacks, reduced rebuild times from hours to minutes, and freed engineers to focus on product work while enabling further automation of their AWS infrastructure.
