Boston Scientific, a Fortune 500 medical device company with $7+ billion in revenue and 24,000 employees, launched the ImagineIF Innovation Fund in 2014 to sustain meaningful innovation across its global organization. Facing the common challenge that one-off events (hackathons, festivals) rarely produce lasting impact, the company designed a multi-year, venture-style program to increase the internal innovation pipeline, diversify idea sources beyond R&D, and embed innovation into corporate culture.
To operationalize ImagineIF, Boston Scientific used the ideaPoint platform to enable easy online submissions, custom workflows, automated routing, centralized tracking and transparent reporting without heavy IT investment. The program captured hundreds of ideas (350+ submissions in year one, with 13 projects funded), saw submissions rise ~50% by year three, and successfully scaled the initiative across divisions—helping the company quickly vet, fund and communicate high-impact projects while reinforcing “meaningful innovation” internally.
