Valley Health Using Telehealth to Extend Care to Rural Patients

Valley Health, a nonprofit health system operating six hospitals across northern Virginia and parts of West Virginia and Maryland, struggled to deliver specialty and chronic care to patients in remote, mountainous communities. To overcome long travel times and limited local specialist availability, Valley Health partnered with Amwell to deploy telemedicine/telehealth technology across its network.

Amwell enabled a multidisciplinary telehealth program spanning chronic disease management (notably COPD education), transition care clinics, oncology, neurology, and patient/staff education. Using Amwell-supported virtual training and telemedicine carts/scopes for follow-up visits, Valley Health extended COPD education to rural sites, let fragile patients return home while receiving remote care, and achieved significant cost-avoidance through its transition care model.
