How UMass Memorial Health Care Partnered with Amwell to Improve Operational Efficiencies within its Telestroke Network

UMass Memorial Health Care, the only designated Level I Trauma Center in Central Massachusetts, had a decade-old, home‑grown telestroke network built from 14 disparate communication systems and a 21‑step consult workflow that made expansion and timely stroke care difficult. To modernize and simplify its program, UMass Memorial partnered with Amwell, implementing the Amwell clinical portal and planning deployment of Amwell 210 Telemedicine Carts to replace legacy Cisco carts.

Amwell consolidated and automated the telestroke workflow—bridging Epic and Cisco, incorporating NIHSS and PACS access, and enabling mobile and browser case review—so neurologists can acknowledge cases within minutes. Since launching the Amwell solution, UMass Memorial completed more than 1,000 telestroke consults in six months, cut communication systems from 14 to 4 (71% decrease), reduced workflow steps by 38% (from 21 to 13), expanded the technology to a teleNICU pilot, and improved provider satisfaction and measurable performance tracking.
