Case Study: UAB Medicine addresses neurologist shortage in the Stroke Belt with Amwell telestroke solutions

A Amwell Case Study

Preview of the UAB Medicine Case Study

How UAB Medicine addressed the neurologist shortage in the stroke belt through a state-wide telestroke program

UAB Medicine, the only certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in Alabama, faced critical access challenges caring for stroke patients across a largely rural state in the “stroke belt” amid a severe shortage of vascular neurologists. To extend specialist reach and reduce delays in time-sensitive stroke care, UAB Medicine partnered with Amwell, deploying Amwell’s C210 and C750 telemedicine carts and platform to enable remote, on-demand telestroke consultations.

Using Amwell technology, UAB Medicine implemented a tailored statewide telestroke workflow and training program across rural hospitals; today the health system has deployed 13 Amwell care points and expanded telestroke services to 10 rural hospitals. The program has conducted 430+ telestroke consults, achieves an average time-to-evaluation of six minutes, and led to tPA administration in 11.6% of consults—substantially improving rapid access to vascular neurologists through Amwell-enabled telemedicine.
