How Norman Regional Health System Activated Virtual Care Amid COVID-19

Norman Regional Health System, a multi‑campus rural health system in Oklahoma, faced the urgent challenge of keeping patients and providers connected when COVID‑19 began limiting in‑person care. Already partnered with Amwell for prior telehealth initiatives (including Norman Regional Virtual Care), the system needed to rapidly scale virtual services across primary, specialty, ambulatory and rehab care to maintain access and operations.

Using Amwell’s virtual care platform, Norman Regional’s telehealth team created provider accounts, rolled out comprehensive guidelines and used a “train‑the‑trainer” model to onboard staff. In just 72 hours they enrolled nearly 200 providers and roughly 20 clinics, growing from 1 active specialist to 173 total providers and standing up 22 virtual practices (including 19 in‑person clinics on the platform). The effort produced a four‑fold month‑over‑month increase in total virtual visits (three‑fold for scheduled visits), doubled average daily on‑demand visits, and cut support calls from about 75 per day to one or two.
