How Children’s Omaha improves mental health access and outcomes through telehealth

Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, faced severe pediatric psychiatry access challenges across rural Nebraska and Iowa where most counties lacked practicing psychiatrists and families were traveling hours for brief follow-up visits. To expand access, Children’s partnered with Amwell to launch an integrated pediatric telepsychiatry program connecting primary care offices, rural hospitals and its own clinics via a telehealth platform.

Using Amwell’s telehealth solution and a clinic-based telepresenter workflow led by Dr. Jennifer McWilliams, Children’s delivered remote evaluations and follow-ups that enabled more local care. After one year the program completed 600+ visits by one psychiatrist, reduced follow-up no-show rates by 50% (from about 10% to 5%), saved roughly 26 hours of weekly windshield time for the provider, and has expanded to additional clinics and providers to meet growing demand.
