How Augusta University Health Quickly Integrated Telehealth into its COVID-19 Response Plan

Augusta University Medical, an academic medical center serving Georgia and South Carolina, was in the early stages of launching direct-to-consumer urgent care and a teleED program when COVID-19 arrived in March 2020. To minimize employee exposure while maintaining safe, rapid testing and treatment, the organization needed to quickly convert its AU Health Express Care platform into a virtual COVID-19 screening clinic with support from telehealth vendor Amwell.

Working closely with Amwell, Augusta University Medical converted, implemented, and deployed a virtual screening program and expanded virtual ambulatory care; over 100 providers were trained in the first two days and the rollout ultimately reached 35 ambulatory clinic sites. The Amwell-powered program trained 1,150 providers and completed more than 12,300 virtual COVID-19 screenings by the end of April, and enabled partnerships with the Georgia Department of Public Health for testing coordination and broader geographic reach.
