Breaking Down Distance Barriers with Telemedicine Carts

The University of Virginia faced large medically underserved regions—notably the coalfields of Southwestern Virginia—where long travel times and limited local specialty care worsened outcomes and made time-sensitive treatment like stroke care difficult. To bridge distance and keep patients at home, the University of Virginia partnered with Amwell to deploy Amwell 750 telemedicine carts as part of its comprehensive telemedicine program.

Amwell’s 750 telemedicine carts, plus integrated peripheral devices and easy-to-use audio/video, were rolled out across UVA’s network, enabling more than 40,000 consults in 40 specialties, a 4.6x growth in telemedicine encounters, a 30% increase in satisfaction among remote patients, and saving Virginians 8.9 million miles of travel; 73 new clinical projects are now under development. By providing reliable, clinician-friendly telemedicine technology, Amwell helped UVA expand access, improve care quality, and scale specialty services rapidly.
