Washington and Lee University - Customer Case Study

Washington and Lee University engaged Ameresco to help meet its long‑term goal of campus carbon neutrality and to reduce energy consumption across 69 buildings (1,582,806 sq ft). W&L selected Ameresco through a competitive process to deliver an energy savings performance contract (ESPC) that would fund infrastructure upgrades while shrinking the university’s carbon footprint.

Ameresco developed, designed, implemented and now measures and verifies a $2.5 million ESPC that included lighting retrofits (over 13,470 fixtures upgraded to fluorescent, LED and HID), water‑conservation upgrades, boiler economizers, steam‑trap repairs, variable speed drives and pool system improvements. The project—completed in 2008—has met and exceeded goals, delivering more than $455,000 in annual energy savings and reducing CO2 emissions by 2,787 metric tons per year.
