To Further Sustainability Efforts, MSP International Airport Installs 11,835 Solar Panels

The Metropolitan Airports Commission, owner and operator of Minneapolis‑St. Paul International Airport (MSP), needed to reduce its carbon footprint and lower operating costs while meeting sustainability and financial goals across its 2.8M sq ft facility. To achieve this, the Metropolitan Airports Commission partnered with Ameresco under an Energy Savings Performance Contract to upgrade the airport’s energy sources and lighting.

Ameresco delivered a 4.3 MW custom solar installation with 11,835 panels, converted 12,632 fixtures to LED, and installed eight EV charging stations as part of the $37 million ESPC. The project produces positive annual cashflow (>$267,000), reduces roughly 9,464 metric tons of CO2 per year, provides a 30‑year NPV of over $14.8 million, includes a 20‑year O&M guarantee, created 450+ construction jobs, finished on time despite harsh weather, and has received national recognition.
