Project Transforms Campus to Reduce Carbon Emissions and Improve Region’s Air Quality

The University Of West London partnered with Ameresco to tackle ageing heating, ventilation and lighting systems across four campus sites as part of its push to reach net zero carbon by 2030 and improve local air quality. Ameresco designed a campus-wide decarbonisation retrofit using energy-efficiency measures, LED lighting upgrades, ground source heat pumps, solar PVT and building management system enhancements, supported by a £5m Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme award.

Ameresco replaced gas boilers with ground source heat pumps, installed several hundred solar panels and upgraded lighting, creating low‑emission heating and on‑site renewable generation. The project delivers an estimated 529.3 tonnes CO2 saved annually (about 9,460 tonnes over equipment lifetime), roughly 3.11 million kWh annual gas savings, the equivalent of planting 25,000 trees, and has been recognised by the Energy Managers Association—demonstrating clear operational and environmental impact.
