PIDC Increases Resiliency with a New 8 MW Natural Gas-Fired Peaking Plant at the Philadelphia Navy Yard

Philadelphia’s Public-Private Economic Development Corporation(PIDC) needed to increase resiliency and meet growing energy demand at the 1,200-acre Philadelphia Navy Yard while avoiding costly distribution system upgrades. To address peak management, ancillary service participation, and reliability goals, PIDC partnered with Ameresco to deploy on-site generation integrated into the Navy Yard’s private microgrid.

Ameresco designed, built, commissioned, and will provide long-term operations and maintenance for an 8 MW natural gas-fired peaking plant that anchors one of the largest private microgrids in the United States. The Ameresco solution delivers peak shaving during high-cost periods, enables participation in the PJM Ancillary Service Market, provides critical back-up during extended outages, and generates revenue to help offset increased capacity costs—directly supporting the Navy Yard’s growth and resiliency objectives.
