Minnesota State University, Mankato Reduces Annual CO2 Emissions by 4,464 Metric Tons

Minnesota State University, Mankato aimed to increase campus-wide energy efficiency, reduce its carbon footprint, and improve the learning environment despite budget shortfalls. Through a state-wide competitive bid, Ameresco was awarded an $8.1 million Energy Savings Performance Contract to deliver campus-wide LED lighting and central plant upgrades across 31 buildings (1.7 million sq. ft.).

Ameresco audited 45 campus buildings and implemented measures including over 22,000 interior and exterior LED retrofits, building automation optimization, chiller VFDs and chilled water valve installation, and central boiler/control upgrades. The Ameresco project is expected to save about $404,728 annually, reduce CO2 emissions by 4,464 metric tons per year, guarantee 5,983,084 kWh and 2,048 therms saved annually, and provide ongoing operational and maintenance savings over the 18‑year contract.
