Landfill Gas to RNG Plant to Reduce Over 27,000 Tons of CO2 Emissions Per Year

Republic Services needed to capture and beneficially reuse landfill gas from its Benson Valley site to serve Central Kentucky with clean energy and meet its sustainability goal of increasing biogas reuse by 50% by 2030. To do this it partnered with Ameresco to develop a landfill gas-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) solution that would cut greenhouse gas emissions and provide a dependable renewable fuel source.

Ameresco designed, built, owns and operates the Benson Valley Landfill Gas to RNG plant, which reached commercial operation in August 2023 and can process 2,000 scfm of raw landfill gas with an annual gross nameplate capacity of 480,000+ dekatherms. The facility reduces roughly 27,000–27,440 metric tons of CO2 per year (equivalent to about 326,000 acres of forest or 31 million gallons of gasoline not combusted), delivering measurable emissions reductions and advancing Republic Services’ sustainability objectives.
